Therapy for Depression
Depression can stop you from seeing the beauty around you. It can get in the way of meeting your goals and enjoying life. It is so much more than just having a rough day. It can change how you view yourself, others, and the world. If you’re experiencing depression, you might lack motivation, sleep too much or not enough, eat too much or not enough, or feel worthless, among other things.
With my clients, treatment for depression starts with getting through the day. This might mean getting back to or developing self-care practices, addressing the barriers to doing so, or reaching out to your loved ones.
Next, we will look at how to recognize and shift thinking patterns, develop sustainable coping skills, and rediscover meaning. Some approaches we may use include Acceptance Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT).
ACT is a combination of mindfulness and thinking strategies to help you accept and get space from difficult thoughts and feelings. It also focuses on finding meaning and fulfillment in this current chapter of your life. This means identifying your personal values and developing values-informed goals.
CPT is a writing- and discussion-based approach to help recognize and shift thinking patterns and reduce the power of negative beliefs. This is a good fit if you find writing, reflection, and discussion therapeutic.
